Anastrozole is a drug indicated in the treatment of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. It is used both in adjuvant therapy (i.e. following surgery) and in metastatic breast cancer. It decreases the amount of estrogens that the body makes. Anastrozole belongs in the class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors. It inhibits the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for converting androgens (produced by women in the adrenal glands) to estrogens.

Anastrozole Description:
Anastrozole, also called Arimidex, works as well as tamoxifen – the current gold standard treatment for post-menopausal women after surgery.
Some breast cancers need the hormone oestrogen to grow. In women who have been through the menopause, the main source of oestrogen is through the change of sex hormones called androgens into oestrogen. An enzyme called ‘aromatase’ is needed for this change to occur. Anastrozole works by blocking (inhibiting) this enzyme. This reduces the amount of oestrogen in your body, which slows the growth of the cancer cells.
It is normally treated with surgery, often an lumpectomuy, and radiotherapy before patients are given a drug called tamoxifen to stop the cancer returning.
Many breast cancers are stimulated to grow by the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone and are treated with drugs that block the effects of these hormones.
Anastrozole was as effective as tamoxifen and carried fewer side effects, researchers found Anastrozole was as effective as tamoxifen and carried fewer side effects. But in menopausal women oestrogen is mainly produced by changing androgens (sex hormones produced by the adrenal glands) into oestrogens through a process called aromatisation. This happens mainly in the fatty tissues, muscle and the skin and needs a particular enzyme called aromatase.
Anastrozole, a type of hormone therapy called an aromatase inhibitor, blocks the process of aromatisation by lowering the amount of oestrogen in the body. In advanced breast cancer the cancer cells may grow more slowly or stop growing completely.
Anastrozole Use in Cancer:
Anastrozole is approved to treat:
- Breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have any of the following types of breast cancer.
- Early-stage, hormone receptor positive (HR+) breast cancer. It is used in women who have already received other treatment.
- Locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer that is HR+ or hormone receptor unknown (it is not known whether it is HR+ or hormone receptor negative). It is used as first-line therapy in these patients.
- Advanced breast cancer that has gotten worse after treatment with tamoxifen citrate.
Anastrozole is also being studied in the treatment of other conditions and types of cancer.
